MAME ROM paths
Three of the available MAME ROM paths in RetroPie are shared directories which are used past more than than i emulator: arcade, mame-libretro, mame-advmame. In gild to successfully load zipped ROM sets in these locations you must specify the arcade emulator version which matches your ROMs.
